Sensitization requires repeated exposure. A small molecule, called a hapten, penetrates the epidermis, binds to skin proteins, and is presented by Langerhans cells to T cells. Allergic contact dermatitis requires prior sensitization, affects only susceptible individuals, and can be provoked by trace amounts.
Irritant reactions are considerably more common in dogs. Documented canine contact allergens span a predictable set of household categories. Plastics and rubber in food bowls and toys, often via the accelerator chemicals used in rubber manufacture, produce the classic depigmenting muzzle and chin dermatitis. Carpet and upholstery products, including deodorizing powders, stain treatments, and shampoos, affect the ventral abdomen and axillae in dogs that lie down on treated surfaces. Lawn and garden chemicals, fertilizers, and certain plants such as wandering jew and some grasses affect the feet and ventrum.
