What Is Malassezia and Why Is It on Healthy Dog Skin?

What makes M. pachydermatis unusual among the Malassezia species is that it is the only member of the genus that does not require exogenous lipid supplementation to grow in culture. Human-associated Malassezia species are strictly lipid-dependent. This metabolic independence is part of why M. pachydermatis colonizes canine skin so successfully, though it still strongly prefers sebum-rich microenvironments.
The yeast is easily recognized on a stained slide by its distinctive peanut, footprint, or snowman shape, produced by unipolar broad-based budding, typically measuring around 3 to 8 micrometers. Once seen, it is hard to mistake for anything else.
Understanding that Malassezia is a resident rather than a contaminant reframes the entire clinical problem. The question is never is yeast present. The question is why has a normal resident multiplied to a population that is now driving inflammation.
Where Does Malassezia Live on a Normal Dog?
Malassezia distributes itself according to moisture, temperature, and available skin lipids, which means its normal habitat map is essentially a map of the warm, folded, and greasy parts of a dog.
